New York City is home to many of the most powerful and wealthy people in the world. It is also home to some of the most desperate and disadvantaged. Through this trip you will be challenged to:

  • Witness and experience the struggles placed by social barriers
  • Discover the joys of community that defy stereotypes
  • Learn to value and communicate with people who are different
  • Challenge your comfort zones
  • Love without distinction

If you give your spring break to immerse yourself in the heart of the Bronx you can learn about the complex issues facing the people living there and explore how to pursue justice and service in your own life. This week could change your life!

The project will include the following:
  • Mentoring at after school programs
  • Arts camp
  • Community organizing
  • Teach computer skills to young adults
  • Demographic research
  • Orientation to NYC
  • Partnership with highly regarded local ministries.
        Currently confirmed:
         Latino Pastoral Action Center
  • Optional Bible study and group worship
  • Hands-on experiential learning and engaging lectures
  • Have fun in NYC

  • The team will receive an introductory overview of the Bronx by NY Police officer Keith O'Donnell. Each day, teams will serve a local organization or individual with needs in the city. The typical day will begin with breakfast followed by service from 9:00am to 4:30pm. Responsibilities will include maintenance in the building, administrative services, and serving the kids in the community with arts, crafts and fun projects!

Each evening, there will be group discussions exploring the intersection of Christian faith and service. All spiritual viewpoints are welcome and no previous experience with the Bible is necessary.

    Costs
If you bring a friend on the trip with you, the per person cost is $150. This base cost covers transportation to New York, all transportation within the city, lodging, food, and materials. Participants should bring their own money for food while traveling, souvenirs, and any fun activities. If you decide to come by yourself, the per person cost is $300.
*For the purposes of the discounted rate, a "friend" may not include members of InterVarsity and other campus Christian groups.

HRCF/AACF may choose to do additional campus fundraising to lower team costs and there may be additional need-based scholarships available. If you would like to come but are concerned about costs, we encourage you to apply and discuss your situation with an InterVarsity staffworker.

If you have any questions, contact your local InterVarsity campus staffworker or contact:

    harvard.nyce@gmail.com

Registration is limited to 20 people- please enroll as soon as possible
Late registrations may be subject to a late fee. Applicants submitting after their campus deadline will be accepted on a rolling basis at the discretion of the trip director. If accepted, you will be required to pay a non-refundable deposit of $100 in order to secure your spot on the team. The "bring-a-friend" program intends to encourage students from diverse ethnic, political, and spiritual backgrounds to participate in NYCE. Therefore members of InterVarsity and other campus Christian groups -- while certainly encouraged to invite friends on NYCE -- may not count as each other's friends for the purposes of the discount.

    Application is closed.
